August is hot, hot, hot! And humid. I’ve been drinking a ton of water to ensure that I’m properly hydrated. I don’t know about you guys, but I definitely notice an improvement in my mood when I am properly hydrated. Infusing some fresh mint into the water makes it that much better and easier to drink.
I bought such a bounty last week, so we still have quite a bit of produce left over (as an aside, have you joined my mailing list yet? If you do, you get tons of tips and tricks for better produce storage). We are also busy harvesting from our summer garden, which is full of tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, and soon, tomatillos. As a result, we didn’t purchase much at the market: we want to make sure we don’t waste what we already purchased and what we were about to purchase.
Whitefish
Farmers markets aren’t just for fruits and vegetables; often, there are vendors that sell fish and meat as well (these are also seasonal).
We are cooking up this whitefish tonight and serving it with my ground cherry salsa. The sweet and spicy salsa is a great complement to the mild and flaky fish.
Mushrooms
I’m using this as an exercise in how to photograph mushrooms 1,000 ways and still keep it interesting. I’ve been practicing manual mode with my camera recently.
This is the same mushroom mix we always get: oysters, shiitakes, and baby bella/cremini mushrooms. We are saving all the woody stems to make a mushroom broth, a much better use than throwing them out. I enjoy the challenge of using every bit I can for one simple reason: I hate wasting money.
Peaches
Is it possible to get tired of peaches? When they’re good, they’re goooooood. We haven’t even been cooking or doing anything fancy yet, just slicing them up and eating them after dinner as a non-dessert dessert.
